1001 Nights

Picture
Each night King Shahryar kills a new wife, before she can stop loving him. But his new bride Shahrazad has a plan to save herself. The stories she tells him are so exciting that the king stays her execution night after night.

Sometimes called The Arabian Nights, this collection of stories will captivate children. The unit gives classes the chance to read, write and perform exciting stories from this timeless collection of tales.

Note about this planning: All of our Shakespeare and More English units are built around key objectives from the 2014 English National Curriculum for children aged 7-11. Whatever the curriculum you follow, we hope you'll find them useful.

Shakespeare and More 1001 Nights Unit- The Complete Works
All the bits and pieces you need to teach 1001 Nights- planning and resources.

To teach this unit, you might need:
One Thousand and One Arabian Nights retold by Geraldine McCaughrean
A beautifully-written version of these classic tales. We base our 1001 Night unit on this text.
The Arabian Nights by Michael Foreman
Well-written, engaging and exciting. A great introduction to the stories.
The Thousand Nights and One Night retold by David Walser (illustrated by Jan Pienkowski)
Another beautiful version. Great for children right across KS2.
The Arabian Nights retold by Fiona Walters
Wonderfully illustrated version of some of the most famous stories.
My Sister Shahrazad by Robert Leeson and Christina Balit
A lovely version with the story retold by Dunyazad, Shahrazad's sister. Great for children to read independently.
Aladdin and the Enchanted Lamp retold by Philip Pullman
What more can we say? As perfect as you'd expect it to be.
