Classic Children's Literature

They're classics for a reason...
The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame
Surely every child should get to hear this while they're at school? Oh, and we've got a planning unit for it: The Wind in the Willows
Just So Stories by Rudyard Kipling
A great book to share with Y3 or Y4. Perfect for dipping into. How can you not love reading The Elephant's Child to a class?
Charlotte's Web by EB White
A must for Y4 and upwards.
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
If not strictly a children's book, we certainly read it when we were at school and it makes for a challenging but rewarding read. We've found alternating reading these short stories with Anthony Horowitz's Diamond Brothers series with Y6 worked very well indeed.
Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson
No child should leave primary school without travelling with Jim on the Hispaniola. Pretty much anything they think they know about pirates comes from this book. Pirates of the Caribbean? Shmirates of the Shmaribbean.
The Iron Man by Ted Hughes
Nothing to say really. Splendid.
Lord of the Flies by William Golding
Perhaps not for every primary school teacher as it can get a bit gory at times, but we've read it with at least Y6 classes every year for the last decade and found it to be a brilliant vehicle for teaching not just English, but exploring a whole range of ideas. And we've got a planning unit for it: Lord of the Flies
The Wolves of Willoughby Chase by Joan Aiken
A great classic read for older primary children.
