If not strictly a children's book, we certainly read it when we were at school and it makes for a challenging but rewarding read. We've found alternating reading these short stories with Anthony Horowitz's Diamond Brothers series with Y6 worked very well indeed. |
Lord of the Flies by William Golding
Perhaps not for every primary school teacher as it can get a bit gory at times, but we've read it with at least Y6 classes every year for the last decade and found it to be a brilliant vehicle for teaching not just English, but exploring a whole range of ideas.
