The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
Just the most wonderful read-aloud for Y5 or Y6. We're yet to find a class who haven't been captivated by this story of a boy growing up in a graveyard, raised and educated by ghosts. A work of absolute genius. It also has the best opening lines of any children's book we've read. Honestly.
Uncle Montague's Tales of Terror by Chris Priestley
'You would not like it here after dark...' Uncle Montague regales Edgar with a series of bone-chilling stories about strange, supernatural happenings. Each short story is perfect for Y6 to listen to at the end of the day. Perhaps not one for just before bed though...
